How do you track deceased people?

Recently, we have experienced rapid growth in our church (and became the 44th fastest growing church in the nation)... This is fantastic and I pray that the Lord continues to make Himself more clear to people and more and more come to know who Jesus is through Quest. Now, the tricky part is that we no longer know everyone and their families anymore.

I would love to know the ways that other churches are keeping up with people who pass away and how you keep this information current in Fellowship One. There should be some good ideas out there... We've thought through several, calling life group leaders on a regualr basis, public records and having someone on our champion team reconcile the lists... I will take any ideas, good and bad ones!

    Thanks so much!

When you are a larger church you can never be 100% accurate.  We have 18,000 active households.  There is a wedding & death coordinator where most news arrives about an individuals death.  Even if it arrives through another ministry we strive to have that information fed to this coordinator.  We have four actions around a decease individual.

    1. We change their record status to deceased.
    2. We add a Life Event attribute with information regarding date, spouse, etc.
    3. We edit the Last Name to add four astericks. This makes it readily visible to anyone doing a search.
    4. We split the household.  Add a comment to the surviving spouse status comment. Add a comment to the decease status comment.  Remove all communications values from deceased except home address. Remove all other attributes, assignments, and groups from deceased.

That catches most of the deaths.  The rest are caught when through some action a surviving family member or friend provides us the information.
