Controlling Your Emotions to Gain Trust

I was once asked by a mentor of mine, “What would your staff say about your ability to manage your emotions?” WOW! That question hit me like a ton of bricks because I knew I struggled keeping my emotions in check in all situations.  I am a passionate person that does everything big and not just because I live in Texas, but because that is how God hard wired me.

So I got to thinking, that’s a tough question that requires a great deal of introspection, doesn’t it? Can you answer it, honestly?  Do you even know what impact your emotional responses have on your team?

Well, in order to be a truly effective leader, you must be able to create not only a culture of respect but one that produces creative results as well. Creating a respectful culture is a tall order. Because not only do you have to control your own emotions but you must also manage the emotions of others.  One truth I have witness over the years in HR is that people in a group catch emotions from one another. That can be a scary truth, can’t it?  If you can’t maintain positive emotions how can your team?

So how do we connect with our teams to be as productive as possible all the while bringing God the Glory? It is actually a very simple concept but because of our personalities and emotional responses we mess it up with great complexity! Over the next few weeks I will be examining what God has to say about teams. The way I see it, a team that is designed by God has 5 major parts: Trust, Conflict, Commitment, Accountability and Achieving Results.

Let me begin with Trust…

1. Trust first in God, second in others

Trust in the Lord First – Proverbs 3:5-6 says Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths. I was designed by God and for God, first I must trust in Him! Everyday I have to live in biblical hope that He will not forsake me and I will be under His protection. And that He has a bigger plan for my life than I even have for myself. See, simple concept, hard to live out.

Trust is Active – The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body so it is with Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12. At Fellowship Technologies we work as one unit as a body of Christ; therefore, we are called higher to show the world that we actively work as one unit for Christ.  So everyday I have to be intentionally active in how I trust God first and then how I trust each of my co-workers. But actively trusting people takes time, is never complete and must be maintained. Join me next week to learn three ways you can maintain the foundation of trusting others.

I was actually saved while reading God's word several years ago. I was reading from the Amplified version. What's cool about the Amplified version is how it translates the Greek word for believe. It says something like, "trust in, rely upon, etc..." So, as I continued to read, I was struck by the constant references to the call to trust. And then, it became clear to me as I continued to read that my trust was to be put in him. I will bear bones here and say that it was due to great anxiety that I was seeking Christ in the first place. After spending many years chasing different thinking systems that I was so moved by the difference that was in Christ. I had never heard his words before. Upon trusting in Christ, I was then empowered with the possibility of being able to manage my emotions. One thing that struck me for example was that he commanded us to not take anxious thought. I thought, if he's commanding me NOT to do it, then it infers that it's possible for me to obey. That became quite challenging because I moved from a victim role of experiencing anxiety to one where I had to take responsibility for my thoughts. It was then that I began to heal. I have done many word studies as related to trust and God and it is amazing how simply doing word studies and isolating the word and by reading the filtered list, I am ministered to. Even as I write this I am reminded of his wonderful word that somehow transcends the crazy pace of the world. Thanks for helping me to remember.

I loved this writing! It took me back to a place in my life where God really began showing me about "trusting Him", "surrendering", and "obeying" and the meaning of those things. Once we get our priorities in order, with God being at the top of the list, then we are able to see His hand in the decisions, situations, and circumstances in our lives; and it may not always be the way "you/we want it" or a prayer "answered fast enough" but God's timing is perfect and precise and our faith is strengthened through the trust we have in Him. He holds the plans of our lives - not to harm us but to prosper us and bring us hope. It's the evil one who keeps the "tapes in our head" stirred up! God is the all knowing and powerful one! We have to come to a place in our lives that we trust Him completely to take care of every detail, and being that all of us are born of a sinful nature, that is not an easy thing to do. As we grow in the knowledge of Christ through His word and learn to lean and trust in Him, then the "evil one" will shutter and flee! Peace, love, and compassion for others becomes a part of our lives. A healing inside takes place. I love a couple of the verses James has given us. "When you bow before the Lord and admit your dependence on him, he will lift you up and give you honor". (James 4:10 NLT) and James 4:7 says..."So humble yourselves before God. Resist the Devil, and he will flee from you. Draw close to God, and God will draw close to you." Don't delay, Trust In Him today. Your life will never be the same. Let the healing and restoration begin!
