Engaging Talent

A Great Team Accomplishes…

5 months ago, I entered a fraternity. (No, I was not back on the ISU campus. Go Cyclones!) Not sure of how I would be accepted in this tight knit group or even what I was walking into, I accepted the position of HR Director.  I am fortunate enough to get to work with 8 very creative and highly competent businessmen. They are results driven and they keep the vision of advancing God’s Kingdom in front of them every day.  They do not act without careful prayer and petition to the great I AM!  Based on the past 3 year’s results, I know they accomplish what they set out to achieve. And might I add they do so with grace and dignity!

If any of you work with people on a regular basis then you know the stress and tension that can come with working in HR.  When I accepted this position, I knew it was going to be different than my past experiences because God lead me here. I knew I would have to let go of my “black and white” HR training and adopt a “manage the gray areas” type attitude. For once in my career I get to choose when to be Human and when to be Human Resources.

I have worked in environments that would be considered an HR nightmare.  One where people were considered expendable, where people’s feeling did not matter, only the bottom line!  One where people’s motto was “it’s not my job,” and where collaboration was a bad word.  I would hear things like, “You find out who ate my ice cream and fire them!”(yes, that really happened)

I now work in an HR dream world. A dream world these 8 gentlemen created prior to my arrival.  They did not know they were preparing such a great culture for me to step into, they just did what they set out to do.  They set out to create a company that would effectively care for people, efficiently manage resources and enable real growth. They have the passion to care, to manage and to grow! And I am grateful for their ability to stay focused when the world wanted to cloud things! I am grateful for their ability to avoid distractions and prioritize the team over their individual needs and for their steadfast commitment to advancing God’s Kingdom!

They hired me with all tall order, to make our culture even better! As a new member of this great team (not quite a frat boy J yet), I am confident that we will accomplish what we set out to do…create an even better culture, one where collaboration is abounding, people are valued for their individual talents as well as personalities, where people enjoy coming to work and where they feel valued and successful. Pray for us!

This concludes my blog series of Emotional Mastery. Look for me next week under a different title and new insight into the world of self-deception!

Much Thanks for reading my blog series on Emotional Mastery!

I would love to hear from you so comment away! Feel free to add to what I have started.  Tammy
