    Anyone actually "anti-mac?"

Just curious if there is actually anyone out there using any other platform than a mac to do video editing, and if so, why?

This is NOT a post to try and argue which platform is better, rather a place to discuss the benefits of either.

I'm not anti-mac, but I am using windows movie maker to do my videos.. It's mostly because of the churhc budget. I'm acutally jsut using what I had already. if it was my choose I would have a mac plus my current computer. I think there are benefits to both. However with my churches budget, I have to stick with what I have. :) Grin and deal is my moto when it comes to that one.. :)

    Hi,

We have abot 20 macintosh computers that are "semi-integrated" within our 175 computer network.  Most of the Mac computers are in our Media Department; however, the main computer we use for video streaming and editing is our Avid PC computer.

Macs are great computers and so are Windows based computers. Have you thought of going Video Toaster for video production?  They have Toasters for sale all over Ebay.

Actually, for the price of a cheap PC plus the software, you can get a Mac mini that comes with all the media development software you will ever need.

. . . plus you can implement a firewire digital video camera and have hardware control out of the box!

You'd be suprised just how afforable the Mac can be especially if you're willing to start with an outdated model.  Even the older Macs can have an edge on PC software.

Although when I worked in Post-Production, the industry standard was the same as is today, Avid.  But, seems the industry standard for churches is quick becoming Mac.

Interestingly enough, the director here at our church is using NewTek's Video Toaster.  Which could be thrown into a totally new thread "To Toast or not to Toast"  My vote is no Toaster.  For those who are looking into the device save yourself the pain and buy everything seperate!  Toaster is horrid. But, it does have some pros for the price.

Today, I am a hardcore MAC edit fan.

Looks like I get to be the moron and ask what's a Toaster? Besides of course, something I put bread in.

    Hi,

Don't call yourself a moron.  The only stupid questions are the ones not asked. Here is a hyperlink that will best describe what the toaster is and does.  It is form the old Commodore Amiga days.

Well I do not like the toaster but I feel that I'd be unjust to my fellow co-worker if he ever reads this thread (dana i still hate the toaster j/k) so I will post another link here so you can check out the official website for NewTek's toaster.  It has the POTENTIAL to be a great tool if you are strapped for cash and need an all in one.

    Good luck!

Don't come crying to me when your toaster keeps burning things. :P

    Re: Anyone actually "anti-mac?"

I'll admit I used to be.   In fact, I made sure all Macs got dumped from our church (they were old anyway).   But later found that I was anti-Mac evangelist.   What I mean is that I ran into people who were quite passionate about Macs, but those particular people could not promote it w/o constantly insulting me (and those people were christians!).

Like many I did not use a Mac because it meant replacing what we already had (expensive hardware and software).   I try to get people involved and try to teach them basic video editing (and other tech related things).   But you know it's really hard to do if I have a Mac, and they do not.

Anyway, I got interested in Macs only after I started playing with one.   We now use a mix of PCs and Macs that co-exist.   Some software is only available on a PC.   And some (like the iDVD) are only available on a Mac.  Out of 200 church members, 5 of us have Macs.   We need tech volunteers.  If we use one platform, we shut out people on the other.

Use a MacPro desktop and you're set for whatever environment you want (mac or pc).

    God bless, and Happy computing.
